What a Beautiful Performance!

From the moment the musical began, I sat in anticipation of the iconic chandelier incident where the intro music to my favorite Broadway show of all time swells. In this theater (Blaisdell) with the live orchestra and the full view of everything (we sat almost all the way at the back left), it made my hair stand on end and I actually CRIED it was so good. I haven't seen this show since Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman on Broadway around 25 years ago, though I've watched the recent movie and of course, have listened to the soundtrack repeatedly in that time. But nothing prepared me for the flood of emotion I was bathing in for the entire show. I was concerned that I wouldn't like it as much since I saw it with the original, iconic actors the first time, but I'm happy to have been proven wrong. A thoroughly enjoyable experience, a decent Phantom, funny Carlotta, fantastic Madame Giry and a great Christine, not to mention an exquisite Raoul (I actually think he was the strongest actor, vocally speaking, in the cast). The show I saw had two different actors playing him and Christine than the normal ones for the show here, but I don't think it lost a thing as a result. What a wonderful revisiting of beloved memories. And what an amazing way to introduce my 10-year old daughter to culture and theater and Andrew Lloyd Webber!
